Have you tried entering the following parameter at the boot promt: linux floppy=thinkpad > P.S. When I tried to install bo into this machine with using bo's tecra > install disks, then I saw color/mono select image. Why? Did the floppy work when you booted with the bo disks? I never got it to work. I'm afraid that this is all that I can suggest you try. IMHO the ibm thinkpad 380 is not a great linux machine anyway, as the video chipset is IIRC not supported by xfree86.
