No, these aren't different source formats.  You need all three files.

*.orig.tar.gz denotes pristine source.  *.dsc is the description file
... also contains md5sums and PGP signature.  *.diff.gz is the diff
file. Use dpkg-source, like so 'dpkg-source -x file.dsc' ... this will
unpack the source and apply the diff(s), set up the control file, etc.
