somewhere, i filed away the previous responses. my problem is that in upgrading to hamm, my ppp scripts didn't follow.
My isp uses pap, and I need to avoid responding to "login:", but instead must initiate on my own. So I now have an /etc/chatscripts/provider script that, after dialing, simply says CONNECT It dials up, connects modems, and fails to connect. I've put passwords in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets.
