This is on my hamm system, up to date as of about a month ago. Any
ideas why that doesn't work?

I thought I had used it successfully in the past. But it's pretty
bad that -x seems to be ignored, and same for tar's l switch.

Couldn't find these on my bo system but will look on my hamm system.
Do these copy the whole disk or the files? The new file system is bigger
than the old one, so I want to copy the files rather than the file
system itself.

I could just tar the file system to a file on another partition.
That would work but should be unnecessary.
