Check the permissions of pppd. bash-2.01$ ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd -rwsr-xr-- 1 root dialout 84608 Jun 20 1997 /usr/sbin/pppd And make sure, the user who should be able to dial out, *is* actually in this group. You can do a "adduser your_username dialout" to accomplish this. It won't break anything if the user is already member of this group, so you should do this anyway.
