This is absolutely NOT true. MWave is a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) which offloads the CPU from doing any modem work. It DOES eat DSP cycles like crazy, though, so in that respect you are correct (though applied to the wrong processor). Please also note that virtually ALL of the newer modems use this type of technology. Only the others usually hide the DSP behind a UART, so they can't use it for things other than a modem (like voice or sound for example).
