Thanks very much for your responses. All responders recommended using ppp instead of slip. I will try a ppp setup tonight.
I started trying to use slip because the NET-3-HOWTO recommends it in this situation. Is that advice now obsolete? John says: "If this works I suggest upping the speed to 115200 and adding compression." As I understand it, 38400 is the highest speed that may be set directly. To get 115200 one must specify 38400, and use the spd_vhi option to setserial. Is this correct, or can the higher speed be set directly by pppd?
