Rob, I still haven't got ftape reinstalled here, so I don't have any new suggestions other than that you might want to ask for help on the 'linux-tape@vger.rutgers.edu' list. Claus-Justice Heine, the ftape author, is quite active on that list. I understand that he has just released a kernel patch for ftape-3.04d.
