Did you check that there isn't already a server on display :1 as suggested
by the error message?
ps -ax |grep /usr/X11R6/bin/X
Also there might be a stale lockfile due to a servercrash.
Check for /tmp/.X1-lock and /tmp/.X11-unix/X1= and delete them.
