On one of my Debian boxes I hear the hard drive being accessed every five seconds and it is really starting to bug me. This is so even when all major applications are stopped and the box is off the network.
The culprit is "update" and the question is "Why does the cache always come up dirty?" As a matter of interest I have been corresponding with update's author who says that he has dropped it in favour of bdflush! Any ideas?
