While testing the upgrading of rex to hamm I have discovered several problems or possible bugs. I will post each of these as separate messages, and ask if anyone else has encountered them, and if they should be reported as bugs.
The rex system had e2fsprogs v1.06-3 installed, and version 1.10-9 was selected for installation. e2fslibsg was also selected for installation. e2fslibsg conflicts with e2fsprogs (<= 1.10-7), so dselect removed e2fsprogs v1.06-3. In the process, the selection of 1.10-9 was lost, so that the message "Skipping deselected package e2fsprogs." was issued when it reached that program. The installation finished without an fsck, which would prevent normal booting. I had encountered this problem in an earlier test, and was not sure if I had made the correct choices in the dselect (S)elect phase, so I re-ran the installation, being very careful about my choices. An experienced user can repair this problem, but it would be devastating to a new user. The packages involved seem to declare their dependencies correctly, so the problem appears to be in dpkg/dselect. Since dependencies are routinely handled correctly by these programs, I don't understand what could cause this isolated problem. Comments?
