The most common mistake is that pairs are reversed when punched down on the connector. If you can get past that, you can probably find bad cable using your computer
Isn't it funny how so few of these cables are shielded? Shielded cables, grounded only at one end (to prevent ground loops), would be much better about static, atmospheric noise, radio pickup, and induced currents from near lightning strikes. I did up my home and office that way to keep the interference from the network out of my ham radio. It works the other way, too.
