The Realtek driver is forked into two different versions. The first
is the rtl8139 driver from Donald Becker who has been a long time
champion of the network drivers. But his is not the one currently
being distributed with the linux kernel. Currently distributed with
the linux kernel is the 8139too driver maintained by Jeff Garzik which
is a forked version of the rtl8139 driver source. I have had no
problems with either driver and have used both of them at different
times.

The Debian install kernel has the 8139too driver compiled into the
kernel. Therefore you don't need to select it manually nor do
anything special to install the 2.4.18-bf24 kernel on your system.
But as soon as you install an optimized kernel such as the 2.4.18-k7
kernel you will find that network drivers modules in the optimized
kernels. At that time you will need to put '8139too' in /etc/modules
so that it is loaded automatically.
