Ok... I ran 'startx' and this time the bottom (lets say) 1/4 of the screen flashed white for a second... and that was it. I mean, the HD gets accessed here and there, but obviously the display is no good. Even if the driver is not the *exact* one, shouldn't something come up, even garbled? The setup program works fine... hmmm... also - is it true that the monitor can get screwed up if I let it stay like that for too long? Thanks for your help!
