If you're suspicious you could transmit bogus information and see if someone tries to use it... If security is a real concern of yours, get ssh and create a VPN to your desired destination (I think there's a HOWTO describing how to do this automatically). For your internal network, the use of switches can reduce the potential for sniffing considerably.
