The debian package is fairly old. I strongly recommend you to download
the actual tar.gz source distribution. I've used KDE on S.u.S.E. 5.0 and
RedHat 4.2. It can be compiled without problems and is very usable even
for an alpha release.

A german version of debian, JF Lehmanns debian gnu/linux, also contains
KDE. So it should work with debian as well. Please note that you also
need the Qt Library.
