Until few minutes ago, I was stumbling on the same error message
 during boot, in the way that you describe. Prompted by your post I set
 out to fix it and the message is now gone. But I cannot tell that I 
 understand myself what was causing it. All I did was update  
 /etc/init.d/boot and /etc/conf.modules from their corresponding
 *dpkg-dist files. Do the same and you will shall live happily 
 ever after.
