Thanks to all those who tried to help me. Afterstep was running in 16bpp, not 8. If I modified the .steprc file I could make the AFstep.xpm icon appear elsewhere on the wharf bar.
The fix was to install xproc_1.12.2_i386.deb from the /debian/updates directory. This made xload work again and fixed the icon not displaying thing. Hopefully this post will make someone searching dejanews late one night happy, because it'll be one more thing that someone on the net has solved for another netizen. david..
