For some reason or another samba stopped working.. it no longer creates the server.dat and wins.dat in the /var/lock/samba directory. Instead it contains a file called SHARE_MEM_FILE and SHARE_MEM_FILE.processes.
The only things I've changed lately that could alter samba are: added 'netbios name = paul' changed 'workgroup = ' parameter changed /etc/(hostname, resolv.conf, mailname) \ changed hostname for new changed /etc/smail/config / DNS address My system was working as a wins server on two interfaces.
