Actually it turns out that using receiver_unqualified_hosts=myhost.mydomain
fixes the problem nicely. Assuming no one else sees a problem with this solution, I'm going to suggest it to the fetchmail FAQ maintainers to replace the current -mda "exim -bm %" solution.
