Jim, I have a very similar setup. I have a Linux box and a Macintosh connected at home via ethernet. I would strongly recommend that you have the modem connected to the Linux box and then use it as a network gateway. The Win95 machine can have access to the internet via IP masquerading. All but a few services can be accessed across a well setup masquerade system. Install diald and you have demand dialing every time you try to make an outgoing internet connection. Once you have it working it is very slick. The packages you need are:
IP masquerading compiled into the kernel pppd diald If you'll look under the HOWTO index at the Linux Documentation Project http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/ you'll find howto's for all of these programs. I'd be happy to help you if you get stuck, just drop me a line.
