OK. First of all, you will have to build a custom kernel to get APM support, as the generic kernel does not have it. Why? Because some machines have bad APM BIOS and crash on installation if we leave it in. I'm not sure if the "hdparm" tool will tell a SCSI disk when it can spin down or not. You might install "hwutils" and try that.
