Hi! Try editing the file /etc/X11/config. Mine looks like this:

- - -
# This file contains configuration flags for the X Window System.
# For a description of the meanings of the flags, see
# /usr/doc/X11/debian.README

run-xdm
run-xconsole
obey-nologin
allow-user-resources
allow-user-modmap
allow-user-xsession
allow-failsafe
start-xdm
xdm-start-server
- - -

Also, if you have shadow-passwords installed, take a look at
/etc/init.d/xdm. It should use xdm-shadow to start xdm, but
atleast on Debian 1.3 installed from frozen it pointed to xdm which caused
many "invalid login"'s.

Hope this helps,

Mika
