I found the problem ... MAINTAINER OF CNEWS TAKE NOTE!!!
I have a backup uucp ihave/sendme feed that only kicks in when one of our sites has a catastrophic failure of our other feeds. The cause of the problem is the new eval. It does not like a regular expression starting with ^ and will croak becaue of it. The $NEWSBIN/batch/batchih and batchsm and batchra scripts use an expression that causes the error. This explains why it never choked on any of my other feeds. A simple edit of these scripts has fixed the problem.
