i am replying to my own message but i finally found out what the problem is. /etc/inetd.conf got wiped out, probably because of the upgrade to either netbase 2.11 or 2.12. i'll check to see which one is the culprit and i will file it as a bug against it (2.12 that is, 2.11 seems to have been obsoleted although both are still just sitting in Incoming).
