Because diald does not know the address (at this end) for the connection, you have to use a dummy one, and so your first connection will never succeed. Likewise connections can't be re-established if your address changes. My family of non-computer-literate people use the internet through a Linux box of mine running diald & IP masquerading. To start the link, to avoid this problem, I have a CGI script running from the web server (apache) which uses diald's fifo option to bring the link up. I have diald set never to bring the link up on particular traffic, only by explicit request. And drop the link after 20 minutes idle.
