I copied i386-linux.tar.gz and teTeX-lib-0.4pl1.tar.gz to /usr/local
and untarred it. I kept my debian AucTeX because I use emacs.
Then I made some symlinks to /etc/texfm
The relevant files in /etc/texfm are:
