Howdy, very sound advice, I'm running on an AcerAcros and you can't get much more generic than that. with a 14" monitor and all standard IDE stuff. Nary a problem installing Linux on this or my 'OLD' IBM laptop. Even the SB PNP16 sound card works flawlessly ($99). Unless you absolutely need an Apple stay away from all that high priced proprietary stuff.
