This may sound like a really dumb question and the answer is probably stored somewhere in a maze of 2meg readme files, but why are all the packages files in the msdos-i386 only 1k? Are these the files I need to download to install these packages???? How can all the X-Windows files be 1k for debian but up to 5 megs for Slackware? The installation guide says that they are links to the Debian archives, but as a Linux newbie I'm just curious? I am downloading the installation disks now, and would like to install it right away!! I just installed Slackware 3.0, but XFree 3.1.2 doesn't support my ATI 3D Rage chip, and Linux 1.2.14 doesn't support XFree86 3.2, so since I heard that Debian came with XFree86 3.2, I thought I'd give it a try?
Please help this poor college student who has been misguided by the world of Windoze 95 :)
