Hello, I have recently installed Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r0 _Woody_ on my Compaq Presario PC which has Celeron 800 MHz Processor, 64 MB RAM, USB Keyboard and Conexant HCF 56 K internal Winmodem (unfortunately). I have chosen the kernel flavour `bf2.4' to get ext3-FS. Now my problem is how to use that HCF winmodem under Debian? I have downloaded a driver for that modem which is in this format: ``hcfpcimodem-0.98mbsibeta02090200.tar.gz'' and extracted the main files. But after that though ``make install'' seems to work, ``hcfpciconfig'' does not do what it is supposed to do and gives error. The following is what appeared after I ran the ``hcfpciconfig'' command :
hcfpcimodem-0.98mbsibeta02090200# hcfpciconfig Linux HCF controllerless modem drivers, version 0.98mbsibeta02090200 WARNING: this is an EXPERIMENTAL BETA VERSION of the HCF drivers for Linux. (this requires a C compiler and proper kernel sources to be installed) Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux] /usr/src WARNING: missing file /usr/src/include/linux/autoconf.h The cause of this problem is usually a missing or misconfigured kernel source tree (and sometimes an incorrect directory or symbolic link). First, ensure that the proper kernel source and compiler packages from your distribution vendor and/or the community are installed. The Linux kernel can then be reconfigured by running "make menuconfig" under the kernel source directory (usually /usr/src/linux). Verify that the proper options for your system are selected, and that CONFIG_SMP ("Symmetric multi-processing support" under "Processor type and features") is disabled, as this driver is presently designed to work on single-processor machines. Then compile and install your new kernel (for more information about this procedure, see the README file under the kernel source directory), reboot the system using the new kernel, and re-run "hcfpciconfig". ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------ Now the messages are not graspable by me. Is it due to the ``bf2.4'' kernel flavour? Please help me in this regard. * My /usr/src directory contains these: kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4/ kernel-source-2.4.18/ kernel-source-2.4.18.tar rpm/ * The file ``autoconf.h'' is under /usr/include/linux/ directory.
