"best" doesn't really matter that much if you can't get it workin :)

I installed debian 2.2 on a few DL380 generation 1s, worked pretty well.
though one of them suffered a disk failure(2 disk mirror) and the 2nd
disk was unable to recover, so 1 failed disk, but it took the other with
it. once we replaced the failed disk and reformatted the 2nd disk was
ok again.

I would personally not use compaq, only reason I had the DL380s was
my former company acquired the assets of another company which included
about 15 DL380s.

other then that disk problem the servers worked well though.
