What sort of things do you want to monitor? For disk space and internet services I am happy with a nagios server and snmpd on each machine. It's pretty easy to write plugins for nagios (at least, Perl ones are easy, don't know about others), so you can monitor a lot of different things. It's not suitable for every monitoring task, however.
