I've given up and gone back to 2.4.29. I'm going to try get the latest kernel source 2.6.11 and try that. Maybe something has been fixed since 2.6.8.
I did try to solve this issue by getting the official (sarge) kernel image 2.6.8-k7-smp but still ran into the same problem. Anyone have some insights or similar problems? This is the wierdest problem I've come across in a long time.
