I'm having a simillar (I think) problem - if I print for instance a
test job to the printer, gs seems to hang, sending a stream of zeros
to a broken pipe. Eventually, I will have to kill the gs process; I
haev waited for minutes -- printing used to start more or less
instantaneously in the past.

In this case, I do happen to have gs-esp installed. gs invoked by
itself seems to come up without any problems. Looking at the logs
though:

I [29/May/2005:14:58:58 -0700] Job 30 queued on 'Dave'sprinter' by
'dfox'. I [29/May/2005:14:58:58 -0700] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/
filter/pstops (PID 6734) for job 30. I [29/May/2005:14:58:58 -0700]
Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster (PID 6735) for job 30. I

rastertoprinter (PID 6736) for job 30. I [29/May/2005:14:58:58 -0700]
Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel (PID 6737) for job 30. E
[29/May/2005:14:59:01 -0700] PID 6736 stopped with status 0! I [29/
May/2005:14:59:01 -0700] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to
find out more. I [29/May/2005:15:45:13 -0700] Job 30 was cancelled by
'dfox'.

I noticed that there's no ps entry for 'parallel' as there used to be
while a print job was going to the ptrinter. But the logs tell me the
backend was started.
