thunderbird and mail from the system

Is it possible to set up Thunderbird to pull up the mail from my mailbox 
on my debian box?

It seems like an obvious thing to want to do, but I cant see any way of 
configuring it.

I was thinking maybe there's a package out there that dummies a pop3 
server for your server's mailboxes.
