Hi Mitchell, I guess the thinking is that if you only reboot once a fortnight then creating the /media/cdromN mount points is no big deal. My gut feeling is that this was done intentionally for some security reason but I don't know enough about it to say for sure. Since I don't reboot all that often and I have integrated my script into a desktop shortcut which I just click and then, when prompted, type in my root password and that's it, I felt I could live with the situation. I'm sure you're right that it has something to do with udev. I recall having to track down the new mountpoint after some upgrade that did involve udev.
