Solved ! Thanks to Ron Johnson who help me to identify the problem:
It seems that in kernel 2.6.8 and later, I need the codepage 437 to mount vfat partitions. I chekcked my configuration in 2.6.6 and it was not needed. /usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.6> cat .config | grep -i "437" # CONFIG_NLS_CODEPAGE_437 is not set and now: /usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.9> cat .config | grep -i "437" CONFIG_FAT_DEFAULT_CODEPAGE=437 CONFIG_NLS_CODEPAGE_437=y and I can mount vfat.
