I know. Because you shouldn't have bought a card with binary only drivers in the first place.
Doing that results in you having the problems that you're having now, with problems on each upgrade that you try.
OTOH, try to disable the suid bit on cdrecord (dpkg-reconfigure -plow cdrecord) and see if helps with the kernel that you have.
Guilty as charged on the video card. But it's one of the better ones I could find. In the future what would you recommend for 3D graphics cards?
