I am running two identical dual processor servers with Debian on an IDE drive and /home on SATA Raid array. The servers boot up fine on 2.6.8 but 2.6.8-smp and 2.6.7-smp barf on acpi with a kernel panic. There is a related bug report on 2.6.8-smp but it may need escalating - I haven't filed a bug report yet but will do if it's not fixed in a few days.
