However, what seems pretty bullet proof is setting up the printers through the web interface (localhost:631/admin - as William suggested).
Log into CUPS. Delete any printers you've already set up. And set them up from there. For network printing, I use samba smb://domain/server/printer because I could never get IPP to work.
