Don't do that (the 'xhost +localhost'); it has security issues that you 
don't want to deal with. Instead, edit "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" and find 
the "X11Forwarding" line and set it to "yes". Then restart ssh with 
"/etc/init.d/sshd restart".

BTW, don't run X as root; instead, install, configure, and learn to use 
"sudo". (I'm not saying you do run X as root, but a lot of newcomers to 
Debian don't realize the security issues/etc involved, so I mention it 
in passing.)
