Well Rob, It happened to me that booting from CD and giving the root=/dev/hda1 option my system was unable to start because of corrupted files/directories. Using a RedHat 7.2 CD booting into a RAM Disk a could mount my /dev/hda1 partition, fix the faulty files, chroot to it, run lilo, and boot my Debian 3.0 again...
