Video 1600x1200 is not logged by X as possible for your monitor.
Not sure what you mean "logged by X as possible". It works fine with my Radeon 9000.
You should try a more conservative resolution. Once you have a display, then slowly increase the resolution (and/or frame rate).
When I get home I'll send you my Xfree config file (radeon 9200 with 1280x1000 video).
