Further investigation shows that web connections work fine. What isn't working is Privoxy, which fails to start up with the message
Fatal error: can't bind to 127.0.0.1:8118: because Cannot assign requested address What seems to be happening is that lo isn't working. "ifconfig lo" reports: lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:98972 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:98972 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:122340835 (116.6 MiB) TX bytes:122340835 (116.6 MiB) However, attempts to ping localhost or 127.0.0.1 time out. I think lo failing would explain both fetchmail and privoxy failing. However, I don't know why lo would fail ... wait. "inet6 addr"?
