Ken, I haven't used Windows in years, happily.
Do you use any Windows-specific software that has no F/OSS equivalent? Office files are covered by OpenOffice.org, media files are covered by XINE, XMMS, and others. Printers, cameras, memory cards, all taken care of. But there are proprietary applications written only for Windows that have closed file standards. So only you can know for sure. Boot Knoppix and try out XINE on your media files, see if they play. Download OpenOffice.org for Windows, see how it does on your office files. Do a backup, certainly, then wipe Windows entirely, give Debian a try. If it fails to meet your expectations, then go back to Windows having learned what to look for in the future. What works for one person does not work for everyone. You need to try things out and see how they work for you.
