When you say NO response. Have you tried setting up a sshd server and ssh into the machine (or telnetd and telnet - but a security problem if you do this in an unsafe place). Sometimes X hangs and it appears that the machine is hung - but you can ssh into it and kill X. That is a different issue than if something is wrong with the kernel and the machine really locks up solid.
