But it should certainly be possible to get Debian installed, and even to
have a GUI of sorts. Certainly one should forget about Knoppix or
anything else that insist on installing a recent version of KDE or
Gnome. But with Debian you can just do apt-get install x-window-system
after installing just a basic system and you get the bare minimum (X
plus twm).
