I installed sarge via netinst on an IBM T23 laptop,
taking mostly defaults, and ended up with an OSS sound
setup.
I don't have Debian on my T23, I have Gentoo. (I have Debian on a desktop and a few servers.) But I can tell you that a 2.6 kernel with ALSA works quite well on the T23.
