I have been windows free on my presario 2540ea laptop for roughly a year now. I don't remember why, but with woody, couldn't get past firewire detection, SuSE 9 installed almost fine, gentoo was a 3 week fight with frustation, but got it done from stage3. The only connection to the net available to me through all of this was an internal winmodem. So that complicated things a little. Well with SuSE, you tend to run out of choices very fast, with gentoo the choices are all there, however, you tend to run out of patience. Came back to try debian in August '04, had three options, debootstrap from SuSE, CD1, or the netinstall. With debootstrap, I almost got there, make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image returned errors while trying to build the initrd. Tried mkinitrd as well, probably forgot a few magic flags to make it work from a chrooted environment. In hindsight, I could've got this to work with the running kernel, had I known about the kernel-headers package. Finally, ended up with 2004-08-04 13:08 /suse/root/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso (daily build). Got a chance to plug the laptop to eth at work for a couple of hours, the only boot baram used was "linux26", and installed onto hda5, grub works like a charm, the entry for SuSE was automagically updated to menu.lst as well. I can boot off hda5 without an initrd. The winmodem driver compiled fine against the kernel-headers as well. Well, last time around with woody, firewire detection was what failed. This time with Sarge, I was promted with two network options, eht0 (natsemi) or firewire(TI). Treid a few kernel-images in the 2.6 series, acpi somehow didn't work well as modules. Compiled a few kernels (.7, .8 and .9), all work well, the 2.6.9 kernel-source package is the only kernel-source that failed to compile with make-kpkg. The .9 from kernel.org compiled without errors. That is what I am running now. ( .config, lspci, dmesg etc. are at gpoppy.org I am a regular on #debian as well.
