If you've never used Linux before you may be more comfortable running the occasional Linux program from within a VMware-Linux started in Windows. Or maybe part of your system doesn't work yet within Linux, e.g. you have a winmodem. For a while the biggest reason for me to boot up Windows was to burn a cdrom. That wasn't functioning yet within Linux for me - now it is. I'm not sure if a VMware-Windows
That was in 2.6.8 kernels. CD writing worked in 2.6.7 (I do it all the time) and if I am not wrong it is working in 2.6.9 as well.
